Who We Are and What We Do:

The Slate Belt Heritage Center serves the 10 municipalities of Slate Belt. We are a not-for profit 501(c)3 organization.

Municipalities include the boroughs of Bangor, East Bangor, Pen Argyl, Portland, Roseto, Wind Gap, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Mt. Bethel Township, Plainfield Township and Washington Township. The Center was organized in 1999 when a group of volunteers set out to refurbish the original 1905 town hall in Bangor, which had been vacant for several years. With the help of donations, grants and a lot of elbow grease the Slate Belt Heritage Center was created and continues to serve the people of the Slate Belt.

The Heritage Center consists of 9 rooms: Chamber, Slate Room, Cornish Room, Welsh Room, Flicksville Room, Homefront Room, Italian Room, Textile Room and the Fire Engine Room. Each room displays, through exhibits and artifacts, the unique quality of Slate Belt ethnicity or industry. Room exhibits change to keep a fresh look for our visitors. The Chamber is the original Bangor Borough Council meeting room, where the Center holds meetings, public presentations and displays changing, topical exhibits.

The Center also serves the educational needs of the area. Our Oral History Interviews are available to anyone who wants to research the history of the Slate Belt through the eyes of our senior most residents. There is also an extensive library where visitors can research and find genealogy assistance. The DVD collection of all of our monthly speakers is available. The Center also offers specialty speakers who will visit your organization or school upon request.
